Just as electric vehicles go mainstream, the man known as the father of China’s electric car movement, Wan Gang, says that hydrogen-fueled car vehicles are the future of mobility.

“We need to move further toward fuel cells. The key is to sort out the factors that have been hindering the development of fuel cell vehicles,” Gang, a former Audi executive and currently China’s science and technology minister, told Bloomberg on Wednesday. “The electric and fuel cell cars are both important. People like electric cars in cities, and hydrogen fuel cars intercities.”

  • As China plans to phase out subsidies for the electrical-vehicle industry next year, shares of hydrogen-related companies have already started rising, like the Jiangsu Huachang Chemical Co., which develops hydrogen pumping stations.
  • China, accounting for 99% of the world’s electric buses last year, has already taken steps in shifting towards utilizing hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles.
  • In the last couple of days, automotive manufacturers introduced the latest hydrogen vehicles in the CES Asia exhibition in Shaghai, like Nexo, Hyundai’s hydrogen vehicle prototype.
  • Even in the U.S., hydrogen fuel automobiles are on the rise with companies like Alaka’i Technologies, a hydrogen-powered mobility company.
  • Karma Take: Hydrogen-fueled vehicles can be a smarter option for the motor industry, since they produce next to no global warming emissions in comparison to even electric cars.
